1. A "Gas Tax Holiday" o provide relief for Texas drivers struggling with skyrocketing gasoline prices.

2. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the national average price for a gallon of gas is $3.610, and Texans are paying $3.501 a gallon of regular gas this week.

That's up 10 cents from last week and nearly 77 cents from just a year ago.

3. Gas makes everything else more expensive. Food is more expensive because of delivery costs. Clothes are more expensive to manufacture. 

4. The State of Texas collects 20 cents per gallon of gasoline and diesel fuel. Last year, the state collected $2.26 billion in gas taxes and $673 million in diesel taxes.

5. Saving 20 cents a gallon adds up quickly - every time you fill up a 20-gallon tank, that would save you $4.  It's like a coupon for gas.

6. The gas tax is one of the most regressive taxes in Texas, and actually hurts Texas families more than the sales tax. No matter how much money you make, we all have to drive.

7.  With the start of the summer and families traveling, we can't afford are these gas prices. Passing the Gas Tax Holiday and suspending the gas tax is something we can do give Texans real tax relief real quick.

8. Congress is currently considering eliminating the federal tax on gas and diesel for sixty days. The measure, proposed by Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), would reduce the cost of gas by $0.184 per gallon and the cost of diesel by $0.244 per gallon. In fact, two Presidential nominees have proposed this tax cut for working famlies.

9. A number of other states are currently considering this, including New Hampshire, New York and Maryland.

10. We are calling on Governor Perry to add the "Gas Tax Holiday" to the agenda for this special session.


HOW TO PAY FOR IT:
We estimate the cost of this at $700-$750 million. Currently, Texas has $15 billion dollar surplus.
